Going to a Portrait Studio

Before you plan to visit any portrait studio, it is important that you have a prior knowledge of things you are expected to follow while preparing to have your portrait made. This requires certain amount of planning on your part so that things work out smoothly for you. However, the planning varies depending upon whether you are going in for self portraits or you wish to gift a portrait to someone.

In case you are planning for a self portrait, there are a few things you need to follow:

Type of Clothes: It is preferable to wear darker clothing as these tend to blend the bodies with the background so that the face is prominently seen. Also bright colored prints and patterns should be minimally used to avoid distraction of any sort. For both formal and casual portraits, long sleeves and long pants are a must. An acceptable neckline is one that comes up close to the neck to make it look slender. In general, clothing should not be too tight or too loose.

Type of Footwear: Always try to coordinate footwear to match your clothing. Avoid sneakers unless you wish to go in for a casual look.

Type of Hair Style and Makeup: Hair should be simple and pulled back from the face to allow light to get into the subject’s eyes and avoid any distractions. Eye makeup should be blended with no sharp demarcation lines between colors. Foundation should blend well at the jaw line so that there is no demarcation between the face and the neck. Avoid using glitter on your face as it is seen as little white spots in photographs.

Glasses: As far as eyeglasses are concerned, you may either choose not to wear your glasses or go in for non-reflective lenses. If possible you can ask for matching frames without lenses from your optician.

If however you are planning to present a portrait to someone, then you need to check on to a few questions:

Who’s it for?
This means whether it is for grandparents, parents, friends or someone special.

What would you like?
You need to decide whether you wish to go in for casual look or formal look.

Are you well prepared?
For whichever look you wish to go in for, make sure you have all the necessary things to support the perfect look.
